In modern cinema, there are three types of montages: Parallel editing, when two different scenes are edited into one, Continuous shot, and Cutaway shots, where we see other parts of what isĪ montage is a sequence of shots that are edited together to condense time. They’re the people we rant about and the ones that make us laugh until it hurts. We all know who our favorite characters are. ![]() The Character Montage project was created by artist Amanda Williams in an attempt to break this mold of cookie-cutter characters by creating a series of portraits depicting fictional characters from various ethnic backgrounds who are They could be white, black, Indian – it doesn’t matter because they all look the same and have similar characteristics: good at sports or academics or whatever. However, many people forget that diversity is important on a much smaller scale too.Ĭharacters are often one-dimensional with no depth or backstory they’re just simply there for entertainment purposes. This can be seen in movies such as Black Panther or even television shows like Issa Rae’s Insecure. In the last few years, there has been a huge push to create more diverse and inclusive media. I’m sure you’ve seen them before – the montages that take more than a minute to get through and show snippets of scenes in one character’s life.
